On Cloud-based Oversubscription
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rising trends in the number of customers turning to the cloud for their computing needs has made effective resource allocation imperative for cloud service providers. In order to maximize profits and reduce waste, providers have started to explore the benefits of oversubscribing cloud resources. However, the benefits of oversubscription in the cloud are not without inherent risks. In this paper, we attempt to unveil the different incentives, risks, and techniques behind oversubscription in a cloud infrastructure. Additionally, we provide an overview of research that has been completed on the topic and make suggestions for the direction of future work. Keywords— cloud computing, overbooking, oversubscription, resource allocation, resource utilization

Group-based memory oversubscription for virtualized clouds
As memory resource is a primary inhibitor of oversubscribing data centers in virtualized clouds, efficient memory management has been more appealing to public cloud providers. Although memory oversubscription improves overall memory efficiency, existing schemes lack isolation support, which is crucial for clouds to provide pay-per-use services on multi-tenant resource pools. This paper presents...
متن کاملTowards an Understanding of Oversubscription in Cloud
Oversubscription can leverage under utilized capacity in the cloud but can lead to overload. A cloud provider must manage overload due to oversubscription for maximizing its profit while minimizing any service level agreement (SLA) violations. This paper develops an understanding of oversubscription in cloud through modeling and simulations, and explores the relationship between overload mitiga...
متن کاملAutomatic memory-based vertical elasticity and oversubscription on cloud platforms
Hypervisors and Operating Systems support vertical elasticity techniques such as memory ballooning to dynamically assign the memory of Virtual Machines (VMs). However, current Cloud Management Platforms (CMPs), such as OpenNebula or OpenStack, do not currently support dynamic vertical elasticity. This paper describes a system that integrates with the CMP to provide automatic vertical elasticity...
متن کاملPower Attack: An Increasing Threat to Data Centers
Entering the era of cloud computing, data centers are scaling in a fast pace. However, as the increasing number of servers being deployed in data centers, the data center power distribution systems have already approached peak capacities. Since the upgrades of the power systems are extremely expensive, power oversubscription has become a trend in modern data centers as a cost-effective way to h...
متن کاملImproving virtual host efficiency through resource and interference aware scheduling
Modern Infrastructure-as-a-Service Clouds operate in a competitive environment that caters to any user’s requirements for computing resources. The sharing of the various types of resources by diverse applications poses a series of challenges in order to optimize resource utilization while avoiding performance degradation caused by application interference. In this paper, we present two scheduli...
